drawings

I started using my graphics tablet. It took a while to install it and get used to using it. Once I had the hang of it I opened photoshop and practiced drawing characters of child soldiers using it.

Here is the first completed drawing.

I found the tablet very natural and easy to use, it is extremely accurate and reacts to pressure. It is excellent for shading, colouring and outlining. Im sure with more and more practice I will improve at using it. The drawing I created is a "cell shading" type of graphic novel drawing.

Field Research

Today myself and Linda went and met with the Graphic Novel Society in college. We talked to a few members of the society about graphic novels and the different styles of graphic novel drawings. We looked through many different comics from "Sin City" to "The Unknown Soldier" and "300".

Artists and styles we need to look up:

  1. Joshua Dysart (artist of "Unknown Soldier")
  2. Yoni Goodman (artist of " Waltz with Bashir")
  3. Cell Shading - Style
  4. Rotoscoping
  5. Photoshop 'Cutout' Filter
  6. A scanner darkly - Animation graphic novel style
  7. Waltz of Bashir - the making of
  8. After Effects - Simple Animations
All this will contribute to our central concept and also our research and design methodologies.

"Maus" a graphic novel by Art Speigelman

I also researched into a graphic novel called "Maus" which tells the story of the jews and the concentration camps in ww2. Like "waltz with bashir" this book used illustration to tell its story and did a very good job. As they say a picture tells a thousand words.

Here is a video showing pages and images from the book.

Waltz With Bashir

I researched up on an animated film called "waltz with bashir".

I researched this film because of the graphic novel style animation, which we were thinking of doing for our project. I think the art work is outstanding and detailed. A mixture of classic animation, flash and 3D.

Even its website is beautiful.

Synopsis
One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari Folman about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there’s a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can’t remember a thing anymore about that period of his life.

Here is the trailer of the film.
